Beloved indie bookshop Reading Frenzy only has 11 days left to raise 25k to re-open their doors, without this cash they will be closed forever after 18 excellent years of catering to and helping cultivate both the creators and lovers of Portland’s independent books, zines and minicomics.
They were one of the very first stores in Oregon to carry my wee little minicomics when I began visiting from Seattle during my high school years.
I’ve pledged, I hope you do too.
Portlanders and Indie Press folk everywhere, be sure to check out the Reading Frenzy relaunch campaign! The store has not only stocked Baggywrinkles ever since I started publishing the series, they’ve also provided reading/gallery/lecture space for hundreds of other creators in the independent press scene. They’ve secured a beautiful new space in North Portland, but the move can’t happen without your help. Take a look at the campaign and spread the word!
Hey so you remember when I shared some of that process art from my work on NIFTYMANCER? The super cool lane defense RPG with artwork by JUSTIN HILLGROVE?
Well the Kickstarter campaign for the game is now LIVE! They also have a playable demo (still very much in progress, but you can see some of the work I’ve been doing) so you can get a feel for how the game will look and operate. I’m really excited to be working on this project, and I’d be thrilled if you’d give it a look.
The Kickstarter campaign is HERE.
The playable demo is HERE.
Enjoy!
Making Magnet Comic.
Magnet Comic is a write-it-yourself whiteboard comic strip.
After successfully funding his project in December, creator Erik Heumiller is bringing it to life — with a little help from a giant printer and a table saw. More in his latest update!
Oh man, this looks amazing! What a clever idea…
Okay Portlanders: Free Workshop #2 is happening TONIGHT! We’ll be covering the ins and outs of running a Kickstarter campaign & workshopping your awesome project ideas. Click the image to RSVP and get directions to the venue (it’s right in the middle of Reed College). We’ll be running from 5pm - 7pm.
Hope to see you out there!
Oh wow, I had such an awesome time last night talking to everyone who showed up for this workshop (THIRTY PEOPLE! DEAR LORD!). Thank you all for braving the cold to come talk about your passions and get pumped to do The Work.
For those of you who couldn’t make it, but would like a copy of the lecture notes (including a list of my favorite articles, books, and videos about Getting Sh*t Done and being a creative person), shoot me an email at lucypcbellwood(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll hook you up.
And remember, tomorrow night from 5pm-7pm I’m running Kickstarter Bootcamp in the very same room. Come learn the nitty gritty details about mounting a kick-ass campaign to fund your next creative project. You can RSVP and get directions right here.
Yessir, Portland people. Next week you have two opportunities to come talk with me about creative stuff. These puppies are open to the public and will involve SNACKS. Do I have your attention yet? Good!
First up is Freelance Badassery 101: Maintaining Enthusiasm in the Face of the Unknown (Monday, January 21st, 5pm-7pm). This is a long and fancy-sounding name for a very simple class. The goal is to help you figure out what you love doing, then empower you to do it more and do it better. It’s a class for anyone wishing to light a creative fire under their ass. It’s gonna have some nitty-gritty info about contracts and taxes and invoices and other business things that might be useful to a freelancer, but what comes first is the Work. And that’s what we’re going to tackle head-on. BYO creative self-doubt demons. They’ll be begging for mercy by the time we’re done. Facebook event with directions and other info is here!
The second workshop is Kickstarter Bootcamp: Harnessing the Herd to Make Your Creative Dreams Come True (Wednesday, January 23rd, 5pm-7pm). This will be a hands-on, practical info workshop for those wishing to fund their creative endeavors. The first hour will cover Kickstarter basics, then we’ll critique specific projects. If you have something brewing that you’d like feedback or advice on, bring it in! I’ll be spilling all the dark secrets I learned while riding out the True Believer Kickstarter (730% funded?! How is that even POSSIBLE?!) and incorporating lessons from other successful projects in the Portland area. Facebook event with directions and other info is here!
Both workshops will take place in the Gray Campus Center at Reed College (3203 SE Woodstock Blvd.). The GCC sits in the central Quad and also houses the College’s dining hall. Parking is available in the North Lot (enter on SE Steele and SE 33rd) or the East Lot (enter on SE Woodstock and SE 36th). The workshops will be held in the Campus Center conference rooms, GCC B, GCC C, and GCC D. Most anyone should be able to steer you towards them, if campus maps prove unhelpful.
Hope to see you there!
My film project is featured on the Kickstarter homepage! Check us out.
Micah is one of the most resourceful, driven young creators I know. He’s going to blow this thing out of the water. Hop on the bandwagon before it’s too late.
A Man and His …Zombie? Check out some exclusive stills from the David Fincher-backed adaptation of cult-fave comic The Goon, plus a Q&A with directors TIm Miller and Jeff Fowler:
The thing that’s so great about the comic was that it really wasn’t just about zombies. It was kind of the melting pot of everything that’s kind of crazy and cool. You’ve got giant robots, you’ve got vampires, you’ve got creatures, demon priests. It’s a great sort of amalgamation of all that stuff. It’s really not just zombies. For more not-just-zombies, check out The Goon’s project page.
I want this film to happen SO HARD. If you haven’t seen the test animations for this sucker, do yourself a favor and check ‘em out. Pure gold.
Our Kickstarter Campaign: We’ve just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $3,000 to contribute to the purchase of a BCS 732 walk-behind tractor for our farm. Make a donation to our cause and receive rewards that include store credit to our All Good Things Organic Seeds web site and a yearlong Community Supported Agriculture share.
We initially chose to rely on hand tools to work the land because we are first generation farmers and didn’t want to go into debt to buy heavy machinery. However there is now too much space for the two of us to maintain with our bodies alone, and we’re looking for supporters to help us fund a BCS walk-behind tractor. The BCS tractor allows us to successfully incorporate cover crops into the soil (an important element of ecological farming), increase our annual vegetable and seed production, and save our lower backs. This will result in a higher quality product coming from our field, and a better quality of life for the farmers!
We’re reaching out through Kickstarter both because of our past success with this platform and because we believe that our community – both locally and outside our bioregion – wants small farmers to succeed. We believe in the power of farm-supported communities, and thank you for contributing to our endeavor!
Our farm needs your support.
These gentlemen and their lower backs thank you in advance.
Okay, so Dylan Meconis’ kickstarter has been successfully funded, but here is why you should pledge today, its final day, before it closes:
When you pre-order any of her three books through this Kickstarter, you are getting them 10% off cover price. Plus, there’s a whole bunch of nifty patches and doodads that have been unlocked, so you get some extra trinkets as well!
So if you were figuring you would just wait to buy one (or all!) of her new books once they’re printed, you will be losing out on that sweet 10% discount off of cover price (plus the extra incentive gifts).
So yeah!
Today is the final day to make your pledge! Get while the gettin’s good!
True dat! Give this woman your shekels!
WOOHOO! My Kickstarter project has been approved, and this is the official announcement of the launch date on Monday July 2nd! Once it launches, there will be 36 days to reach the funding goal. I’ll put the Kickstarter link here on my blog when it starts.

you can read them in full, for free hereA few of the reward tiers are:

$40 :: The signed book, with an original sketch drawn on the title page
$75 :: The signed, and drawn in book, and an original ink panel from Nothing is ForgottenI’ll be adding more rewards (and maybe adding a Kickstarter only hardcover book) depending on how well the campaign goes. If you have an idea for a reward, leave a comment and I’ll see what I can do!
