LUCY BELLWOOD LIKES YOUR BOAT |
Comics, nonsense, and other irregularities by America's one and only dual citizen, tall ship-sailing cartoonist! |
After drawing a bunch of lewd comics for the Portland production of Don Giovanni last year, I was delighted to get to work on this avatar for local librarian and Portland Opera resident historian Bob Kingston (@bobopera). He’s a man of many hats — can you guess what they all are from this portrait?
Also thought I’d throw together a process progression so you can get a look at how things go from rough thumbnails to finished art. You can check it out here.
Enjoy!
A commission came in a while ago for some creatures of the sea. The client wanted them to hang staggered, so I overlapped their tentacles a little to give them some continuity. Loved getting to play with so many bright colors!

Nothing like the illicit thrill of buying original artwork from wonderful creators. Did you want that pirate with the pile of books and the ridiculous parrot? WELL TOO BAD. S’MINE NOW.
The Opening of Tattoos and Scrimshaw took place yesterday at the Maritime Museum, stop #21, which is found on the edge of Vanier Park with beautiful views of downtown Vancouver. It was highly informative about the origins of tattoos, the history of whaling, and the art of scrimshaw.
…
You guys remember when I was working on that illustration for the Vancouver Maritime Museum? Well, their exhibition opened this week and they were kind enough to send a shot of my finished wall piece all installed and captioned up! I’m so excited to see it in person when I visit for VanCAF in May.
The show runs through October, so if any of you Canadian-types have a spare moment, give it a look! It sounds like there are a ton of entertaining and educational features on display.
Vancouverites (and other nautically-inclined folk): I’m excited to announce that I’ll have an illustration in this upcoming exhibit at the Vancouver Maritime Museum! The show runs all summer, so if you’re local (or just visiting for VanCAF in May, like me) be sure to go take a look. Hopefully I can post a preview soon.
If you’d like to be extra knowledgeable about nautical tattoos before attending the exhibit, why not take a look at Baggywrinkles: Sea of Ink? It contains a spotting guide for common tattoos and their meanings! (If you’re short on cash you can even read it online for free.)
An actual thing I drew for an actual job. It ain’t all bad, this art business.
More of my Greek mythology-themed illustration surfaced on the Reed College reunions website! Funny how work from even five months ago looks so outdated to me. I’ve been drawing up a storm and it’s great to realize how much of a difference it’s making. ONWARD!
HMS Rose. What a beauty.
It’s been a while since I did these, but they’ve finally been published! Artwork for some promotional material advertising Reed College’s 2013 Reunions festivities. Art direction by Laura Pritchard. Unfortunately I don’t have the final versions with text included, but at least you can take a gander at the art.
Little Avatar-themed commission I whipped up for someone recently. Surprise Reveal: I have never seen Avatar or its affiliate programs. Apparently they’re very good?
Just wrapped up the colors on my Portland Underground Exchange poster. Dancers, mark your calendars!
Gooooooooose!

A recent commission! Jesse and Caz asked for a pair of mock Victorian portraits for the house they just finished building. Cool stuff.
Well hello there. Welcome to Artistic Veggies. Pull up a stalk.
Are you sitting comfortably? Good. Then we’ll begin.
Think about your least favorite things to draw.
Yup.
Hoo boy.
Don’t get me started.
But, SURPRISE! The only way we get better at drawing this crap is to…
DUDES! I LAUNCHED ANOTHER BLOG!
For everyone who said “Man, 100 Feet, huh? I should do that sometime…” THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. Artistic Veggies is a blog designed to help us collectively tackle the most unpleasant parts of drawing. Feet, hands, horses, cars, backgrounds — you name it. Follow along with weekly challenges, submit your work, and watch as you improve through sheer, bloody determination and blunt repetition. It’ll be fun!
